Nashville Chalk Art Festival
Last month I traveled to Nashville, Tennessee for a chalk art festival. I was honored to be selected as the featured artist for the event. The Nashville Festival raises funds to benefit the Vanderbilt Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences. I am proud to have been a part of a festival that benefits such a good cause.
The festival organizers requested that I create a large, interactive 3-D design. The type of design that is perfect for photo opportunities. After lots of brainstorming, I came up with the concept of a ‘Circus Strong Man’. Viewers would be able to stand on the Strong Man’s hand and it would appear that they were being lifted into the air. In order to create this illusion I would need over 30 feet of space for the drawing.
Before the festival began, I put on a chalk seminar for the participating artists. During the seminar I explained chalk techniques like shading and blending. I also gave a brief description of how to create 3-D chalk art. The artists were very engaging and a lot of fun to work with.
My ‘Strong Man’ design turned out great and I was very happy with the results. Lots of people lined up to get photos interacting with the artwork. The audience at chalk festivals always think of new and exciting ways to interact with the art.
The Nashville festival was an amazing experience for me. The organizers and volunteers made sure the artists had everything we needed. The turnout was great and the crowds were really excited to see all of the amazing artwork. I hope to be a part of this amazing festival in the future!
