The artist behind
the illusion

Portrait of Chris Carlson, 3D chalk artist and 3D mural artist based in Denver, Colorado Chris Carlson · Denver, CO

I'm Chris Carlson, a 3D chalk artist and 3D mural artist based in Denver, Colorado. For more than 13 years I've created large-scale illusions on pavement and walls around the world: artwork that looks flat until you stand on the correct viewing point.

My work uses anamorphic perspective, a centuries-old technique for faking depth on a flat surface, to build scenes that look impossibly three-dimensional from the right vantage point. I've created artwork for thousands of people, with pieces featured in Fortune 500 advertising campaigns and 3D illusion museums across the United States and Mexico.

My style pulls from the things I love most: video games, cartoons, comic books, and my pets. That mix keeps the work playful and approachable, even at 40 feet wide.
